Ella Brew is a Berlin-based ceramic artist from Oregon, USA, with driving interests in color, play-based design, and craft. Approaching ceramics from both a multimedia sculpture practice and production pottery background, Brew works with modularity and aesthetics of function to create ‘useless’ objects meant to be played with and combined in different ways, by artist or by viewer. An admiration of material knowledge, handicraft, and pottery inspires them to continually test new materials, refine their skill, and expand their understanding of functional ceramic design.

This fascination with play is a continuation: at university Brew focused on the analog intersection between animation and sculpture—often resulting in movable, wooden toy objects. In 2022, in reaction to the US's increasingly conservative abortion laws, Brew shifted focus to researching social, political, and emotional structures surrounding abortion, resulting in their thesis please take.

Brew currently lives and teaches ceramic workshops full time in Berlin. There they continue ongoing design project BAKERBREW with collaborator Maddie Baker. Born from shared interests in image systems, infrastructure, and found material, it explores the sculptural possibilities of collection and reordering of informational imagery.

Brew's workshops take place at Clayers Collective, Helka Ceramics, Sculpture Club, Violaine Toth Ceramics, and Clai Studio in Berlin.
